About me
Owen Ho
I started learning piano at age of 6 and that became one of my favourite hobbies. 2014 was the turning point, when I seriously decided to study music in university. Since then, I have been teaching a vast range of music lessons to students aged 6 to 60+, such as music theory, GCSE music, A Level music, IB music, composition skills, aural skills, music softwares, music essays, etc.
I currently work as a music tutor at the Royal College of Music’s Teaching Service and as an examiner for the Cambridge IGCSE Music Exam. I previously received a first-class honours undergraduate degree in music from the University of Hong Kong (ranked #2 by QS Asia Ranking, 2025) and a master’s degree in composition with distinction from the Royal College of Music (ranked #1 by QS World Ranking, 2024). My doctoral studies in composition at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (ranked #4 by the QS World Ranking, 2024) are likewise coming to an end this year.
I enjoy helping students in every possible way. Whether you are looking to take music theory exams, improve academic music grades (IGCSE, GCSE, A Level, IB, AP), develop your aural skills, explore the techniques of composition, learn about music softwares (Sibelius, Dorico, Logic Pro), write your music essays, I probably have something for you. I have long been teaching on Zoom, Skype, and Teams (even before COVID), and am fully equipped to provide a good learning experience.
As a composer in my own right, I have also been shortlisted to represent the UK in the ISCM World New Music Days (Sound and Music) and composed works for prestigious bodies, including the Bloomsbury Festival (London) and the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. Besides composing, I am an avid conductor too. You can find out more about my professional career here.
My approach to music tuition
I don’t see myself as musically gifted, but someone who has worked hard to reach my current level. This makes me an empathetic teacher, as I understanding the challenges that my students may face first-hand.
Additionally, it’s important to let students advance at their own speed. My goal is to establish a safe space where students can ask questions, make errors, and try new things. My teaching method is based on my personal experience: curiosity always comes first, followed by practice and constant learning.
Last but not least, I record students’ progress by maintaining a shared lesson document, where we jot down key points discussed in class. When needed, I also email exercises and readings for further study or revision. For younger students, I usually communicate closely with their parents to ensure that they are aware of their children’s progress too.
