ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory: Section 1.2 — How to Tackle Simple vs Compound Time Questions

One of the most common question types in the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam involves rewriting rhythms between simple time and compound time (Section 1.2). At first glance, these questions can look confusing—especially when the two time signatures share the same number of subdivided beats.

But once you understand the underlying logic, these questions become straightforward. Here’s everything you need to know about simple and compound time, and how to approach this question type with confidence.


What’s the Difference Between Simple and Compound Time?

The key difference comes down to one thing: how the beats are subdivided.

  • In simple time, each beat divides evenly into two parts.
  • In compound time, each beat divides evenly into three parts.

That’s the core principle. Everything else flows from it.

The Three Types of Time: Duple, Triple, and Quadruple

Time signatures fall into three categories based on how many beats are in each bar:

  • Duple time – 2 beats per bar
  • Triple time – 3 beats per bar
  • Quadruple time – 4 beats per bar

Each of these has both a simple and a compound version. The top number of the time signature tells you which one you’re dealing with:

The Key Insight: It’s All About Grouping

Here’s where many students get tripped up. Look at these two time signatures:

  • 6/8 (compound duple) – six quavers per bar
  • 3/4 (simple triple) – also six quavers per bar

They both contain the same number of quavers. So what’s the difference?

It’s all about grouping:

  • In 6/8, the six quavers are grouped into two groups of three.
  • In 3/4, the six quavers are grouped into three groups of two.

This grouping determines the feel of the music and is exactly what the exam questions are testing.

How to Convert Compound Time to Simple Time (Example: 12/8 to 4/4)

Let’s walk through a typical exam question.

You are given a bar in 12/8 and need to rewrite it correctly in 4/4.

Step 1: Identify the time type

Both 12/8 and 4/4 are quadruple time – they both have four beats per bar. The difference is the subdivision (three per beat in compound, two per beat in simple).

Step 2: Find the beat groups in the 12/8 bar

In 12/8, each beat is a dotted crotchet, and each beat subdivides into three quavers. So your first task is to divide the given bar into four groups of three quavers.

Step 3: Convert each group into simple time

To play three notes in the space of one beat in 4/4, you need to use a triplet. Each group of three quavers becomes a triplet in 4/4.

Step 4: Adjust the beat values

The basic beat unit in 12/8 is a dotted crotchet. In 4/4, the basic beat unit is a crotchet. So any single dotted note needs to be converted to a crotchet.

The result is a bar in 4/4 where each group of three quavers is marked with a triplet sign.

How to Convert Simple Time to Compound Time (Example: 3/4 to 9/8)

Now let’s look at the reverse question.

You are given a bar in 3/4 and need to rewrite it correctly in 9/8.

Step 1: Identify the time type

Both 3/4 and 9/8 are triple time – three beats per bar. Again, the difference is subdivision (two per beat in simple, three per beat in compound).

Step 2: Work through each beat group

  • A crotchet in 3/4 becomes a dotted crotchet in 9/8.
  • A triplet in 3/4 (three notes squeezed into one beat) simply becomes three regular quavers in 9/8 – you remove the triplet sign because compound time naturally has three subdivisions per beat.
  • A duplet in 3/4 (two notes in the space of three) becomes necessary when you need to fit two notes into a compound beat. You add a duplet sign.

Step 3: Reconstruct the bar

Take each group from the 3/4 bar, convert the note values and grouping signs as described, and you’ll have the correct 9/8 version.

Common Pitfalls to Avoid

  • Don’t just count the total number of notes. Two bars can have the same number of quavers but be grouped completely differently. The grouping is what matters.
  • Remember the triplet rule. When converting from compound to simple, triplets are your main tool.
  • Remember the duplet rule. When converting from simple to compound, you may need duplets to fit two notes into a beat that normally holds three.
