ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory: Section 2.3 — Transposing Instruments Explained

Section 2.3 of the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam tests your knowledge of transposing instruments.

You’ll be given a question like this: “Here is a bar written for the clarinet in B flat. This bar has been transposed down a major second to be at concert pitch. There are some mistakes. Put a tick or cross underneath the key signature and each note to show whether each is correct or incorrect.”

This can seem tricky at first, but once you understand the key concepts, it becomes consistent and logical. Here’s everything you need to know.


What Are Transposing Instruments?

Transposing instruments are instruments that sound different from the written pitch.

When a transposing instrument player reads a note, the sound that comes out is a different pitch.

Key Terms You Need to Know

Written Pitch

The pitch that is written on the page. This is what the player reads.

Concert Pitch (Sounding Pitch)

The actual pitch that is heard when the instrument plays.

Transposition Interval

The distance between the written pitch and the sounding pitch.

Why Do Transposing Instruments Exist?

The main reason is fingering consistency.

For example, the clarinet in B♭ and the clarinet in A are constructed almost identically—the A clarinet is just a little longer.

Because the construction is so similar, the fingering is kept the same. The player doesn’t have to relearn fingerings when switching instruments. Instead, the instrument does the transposing work.

Think of it like an electric keyboard with a transpose button:

  • You play a C major scale
  • Press a button to raise everything by one semitone
  • You’re still playing C major fingerings, but the sound is C♯ major

Transposing instruments work the same way.


How to Read Key Signatures Quickly

Before we tackle transposition questions, you need to be able to read key signatures quickly.

For Sharp Keys:

Look at the last sharp and go up one semitone.

Look at the second last flat – that’s your key.

Exception: F major has only one flat (B♭) – you just have to remember this one.


Worked Example 1: Clarinet in B♭ (Transposing Down)

The question: A piece is written for clarinet in B♭. It has been transposed down a major second (2 semitones) to concert pitch. Check if the key signature and notes are correct.

Step 1: Check the Key Signature

The written pitch has one sharp (F♯) → G major.

Transpose down a major second (2 semitones):

G → G♭ → F

So the concert pitch key should be F major.

F major has one flat (B♭) – correct! ✅

Step 2: Check Each Note

For each note, transpose down 2 semitones and check if the note is correct.

Worked Example 2: Cor Anglais (Transposing Up)

The question: A piece is written at concert pitch for cor anglais. It has been transposed up a perfect fifth (7 semitones) to written pitch. Check if the key signature and notes are correct.

Step 1: Check the Key Signature

Concert pitch key: A♭ major (second last flat = A♭)

Transpose up a perfect fifth (7 semitones):

A♭ → A → B♭ → B → C → D♭ → D → E♭

So the written pitch key should be E♭ major.

The written key signature has only 2 flats (B♭ major) – incorrect! ❌

Step 2: Check Each Note

For each note, transpose up 7 semitones and check if the note is correct.

The Letter Name Rule (Crucial!)

When transposing, you must count both semitones AND letter names.

For a perfect fifth, the letter name must be five steps from the original.

So if you transpose F up 7 semitones and land on B♯, that’s wrong – it should be C.

Why? Because B♯ is only 4 letter names from F (F–G–A–B), not 5. The correct answer must have the right letter name.


Quick Reference: Intervals and Letter Names

Always check the letter name, not just the semitones!


Summary of Key Steps

  1. Identify the transposition interval (e.g., major 2nd = 2 semitones, perfect 5th = 7 semitones)
  2. Transpose the key signature
  3. Transpose each note – count semitones AND letter names
  4. Watch for enharmonic equivalents – they may sound right but have the wrong letter name

Section 2.3 is worth 5 marks out of 75 in the exam. It’s worth getting right because the logic is consistent – once you know how to do it, you can apply it to any question.
