Section 2.4 of the ABRSM Grade 5 Music Theory exam tests your ability to compare pitches across different clefs.
You’ll be given a question like this: “Compare bars A, B, and C. Circle true or false for each of the three statements.”

The statements might look like:
- A and B are at the same pitch (True / False)
- B is one octave lower than C (True / False)
- C is one octave lower than A (True / False)
This question is actually more straightforward than it looks—as long as you have a consistent method.

What You Need to Know
To answer these questions, you need two things:
- The ability to read all four clefs (treble, bass, alto, tenor)
- The ability to identify which octave a note is in
The Middle C Method
The most reliable way to compare pitches across clefs is to use middle C as your reference point.
Step 1: Find Middle C in Each Clef

Step 2: Compare from Middle C
Once you’ve marked where middle C is, you can easily see whether a note is above or below it—and by how much.
Worked Example
Let’s walk through a typical question.
The question: Compare bars A, B, and C.
- Bar A is in treble clef
- Bar B is in alto clef
- Bar C is in tenor clef
Step 1: Find Middle C in Each Bar
- Bar A (treble): Middle C is on the first ledger line below the staff. The music is above middle C.
- Bar B (alto): Middle C is on the middle line (line 3). The music is just above middle C.
- Bar C (tenor): Middle C is on line 4. The music is below middle C.
Step 2: Choose a Note to Compare
You don’t need to compare every single note. Since the question is about octaves, you can focus on one note that appears in all three bars.
In this example, let’s use F.
- Bar A (treble): F is 4 steps above middle C (C–D–E–F)
- Bar B (alto): F is also 4 steps above middle C
- Bar C (tenor): F is below middle C. Counting down: C–B–A–G–F (5 steps below)
Step 3: Answer the Statements

Exam Tip
In the exam, the music across the three options is almost always the same—they are only different by their octave.
This means you don’t need to check that every note is the same. The question is really asking: “Are these notes in the same octave or different octaves?”
Efficiency tip: Focus on just one convenient note (like the first note of the bar) and compare it across the three options. This saves time and reduces the chance of error.
The Relationship Between Clefs and Octaves
It’s helpful to understand how the clefs relate to each other in terms of pitch:

| Tenor | Lower middle range (around middle C, slightly lower) |
| Bass | Lower notes (below middle C) |
A note written in treble clef will often be in a higher octave than the same note written in bass clef—even though they share the same letter name.
Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Forgetting to find middle C first. This is your anchor for comparing octaves.
- Only counting letter names, not octaves. Two notes can share the same letter name but be in completely different octaves.
- Trying to compare every note. You only need to compare one convenient note to determine the octave relationship.
