Preparing for ABRSM Music Theory Exams: A Quick Guide

Reading time: 4 minutes |

One of the core areas I teach is ABRSM Music Theory, covering both Grades 1-5 and the more advanced Grades 6-8. Whether you’re just starting out or aiming to master the finer aspects of music, understanding theory is necessary to unlock a deeper connection with the music that you perform, compose, or listen. In this post, I’ll walk you through the benefits of learning music theory and what’s covered in each grade.

Why Learn ABRSM Music Theory?

Music theory isn’t just for exam purposes—it’s the foundation for interpreting music with sensitivity and awareness. Even a basic understanding can transform how you read, perform, or compose music. The skills developed through theory study allow you to:

  • Read sheet music fluently
  • Understand key signatures, time signatures, and rhythms
  • Recognise harmonic progressions and compositional techniques
  • Perform with greater confidence and artistry

Moreover, if you’re planning to take a Practical or Performance Grade 6 exam or above, passing Grade 5 Theory is a prerequisite in the ABRSM syllabus. This requirement ensures you have the knowledge needed to interpret and perform music at an advanced level.

What to Expect from ABRSM Music Theory Exams

Grades 1-5 are all about laying the foundation. These grades cover the essential building blocks of music theory. You’ll learn about:

  • Rhythm, note values, and time signatures
  • Major and minor scales
  • Key signatures
  • Intervals
  • Chords and cadences
  • Basic knowledge of orchestral instruments and terms

These exams are all held online. You have the flexibility to take the exam at home or any suitable location within 28 days of booking.

Moving up the music theory ladder, Grades 6-8 are about mastering advanced concepts. These advanced grades delve into harmony, counterpoint, and composition. You’ll also explore a broad understanding of Western classical music. Topics include:

  • Chord labelling and figured bass
  • Chord progression and modulation techniques
  • Composition techniques
  • Score analysis and stylistic understanding

These advanced topics may not be for everyone, as they are often oriented to the art of composition. For students who are committed to pursuing music at a higher level, however, this is often a rewarding experience. These exams are paper-based, which take place on specific dates and require more focused preparation and practice.
